Overall, Trebbiano is a wine that is losing interest in the vineyard as it is rather neutral in character being somewhat lemony and herbal. It prefers warm regions with a high diurnal range to preserve acid and can both ripen well and retain acidity in the right locations. It is late budding so it misses most spring frost event and has overall resistance to diseases but can be susceptible to Eutypa Dieback and Downy Mildew.
It is a high yielding grape and often comes with lower concentrations of flavor. A good vineyard can restrict the yield and produce wines of greater concentration but the grape is rather neutral. It is also suffering from growing International interest in Italian Red wines and is being pulled up and replaced with more popular black grapes.
It is commonly used as a main ingredient in Vin Santo wines. Refer to that page for more information.
Within the Region of Abruzzo Trebbiano has a focused DOC region that includes sites along the sea and more inland at higher elevations. The sea side vineyards have higher fertility in the soils, slower drainage and result in higher yields of lesser quality. These wines are aimed at large production, early consumption wines.
The higher elevations are located on slopes with greater diurnal range for higher acidity, lower fertility and better drainage which makes the grapes struggle and accumulate sugar slower. This results in greater concentration, higher acid and better overall quality. When you look for the DOC label, look for a lower alcohol wine in the 12-13% range for an indication of a higher quality Trebbiano D'Abruzzo.
Trebbiano is also known as Ugni Blanc in France.
