Region: Trentino Alto Adige
Quality Level in EU/Italian Wine Law: Alto Adige, Lado di Caldero DOC, Santa Magdelena
Primary Grape Varietals: Schiava (translates to slave); Vernatsch in German and Trollinger (aka)
Characteristics: Schiava wines are light red wines, mostly sold locally in the Alto Adige region where many cultures and languages merge. Schiava is the most planted grape variety in Alto Adige and the wines are pale ruby in color with aromas and flavors of perfumed violets and strawberry.
Serve: Slightly chilled
The vineyards are warmer than one would expect in northern Italy, especially among the Dolomites. The overall climate is mild alpine and continental with protection from cold winds provided by the Alps and warm valley air rising during the day. Most vineyards are planted in the 300-700 meter range with Schiava being mostly in the Oltradige subregion near lake Caldero.
Some versions are blended with Lagrein for more color and body adnthe Santa Magdelena DOC allows up to 15% Lagrein.
Schiava is high vigor and yielding and is usually trained in the pergola system on slopes. It does well in a range of soils.
Nothing fancy here with these wines - they can lack concentration unless you can find one with some Lagrein blended in.
The best description about Schiava is that it is perfect for a picnic in Balzano on a summer day.
