Region: Friuli Venezia Giulia, Veneto and Trentino Alto Adige
Quality Level in EU/Italian Wine Law: Delle Venezie DOC Established in 2017 as an effort to improve Pinot Grigio quality for the region. Delle Venezia is a inter-regional doc that covers area under vine in Veneto, Fruili Venezia Giulia and Trentino. It is solely focused on the production of varietal Pinot Grigio wines.
Primary Grape Varietals and Wine Styles: Still varietal wines of 85% Pinot Grigio and blending partners including Chardonnay, Friulano, Pinot Blanc, Muller-THurgau, Verduzzo or Garganega.
Sparkling wines in Spumante at the same ratios that require second fermentation in tanks and can range from zero dosage to dry
Pairs with: Antipasto, soups, risotto, fish meals, chicken meals, goat cheese, Mussels, seafood pasta, roasted pork, salmon, scallops, shellfish
Characteristics: Pinot grigio has the ability to produce a range of wine styles and can be found from all over the wine world. From Italy, the copper-tinged, lightly colored wines are typically a touch spicy and driven with minerality and freshness. Most of them are rather neutral aromatically and very medium in structural components (e.g., acid, body). Flavors range from yellow apple, green pear, lemon, lychee, blossom and hay.
Serve: Chilled
Pinot Grigio is a color mutation of Pinot Noir and a member of the Pinot family. It is grown extensively in Northern Italy and a major export to the rest of the world. Some of the better producers are in the Collio and Alto Adige regions but the wine is known to be a bit unspectacular relative to those of neighboring countries, such as Croatia, Slovenia and Hungary.
The berry color is variable but can be darker than many white grapes. They can approach purple or reddish colors that trend to look similar to Pinot Noir, but only in warmer sites. The grapes are early budding and early ripening and can be very vigorous in the vineyard, although with lower yields than what one might expect. The varietal can be susceptible to grey rot and downy mildew. The berries are small and have the potential for a range of sugar and acid levels.
Although the wines are produced in the inter-regional DOC, Pinot Grigio is the most planted grape in Fruili and leads wine production there in an-easy drinking and simple wine. Other styles that approach the fuller bodied and more serious Pinot Grigio wines (e.g., Alsatian) are grown in the eastern hills of the Friuli region.
