Region: Piemonte
Quality Level in EU/Italian Wine Law: Pelaverga di Verduno DOC established in 1995
Primary Grape Varieties: Varietal Pelaverga and DOC requires 85%. Most are 100%
Pairs with: Good friends (According to the label on the most well known Fratelli Aleassadria Pelaverga) and most foods. This is a spicy, surprising high acid wine with great intensity. Almost like a really spicy pinot noir and paired with a range of foods.
Characteristics: This is a lightly colored wine - similar to Nebbiolo but even more pale. Like nebbiolo, Pelaverga has surprising intensity on the nose and palate. In place of the haunting rose petal and red fruit of a Nebbiolo, Pelaverga is absolutely dominate by spices and pepper. It is unlike any other wine. Red fruit, strawberry, cherry, rose petal, flinty stone and pepper, pepper, pepper.
Serve: Room Temperature or with a slight chill.
Pelaverga is essentially produced in one place and that is in the small town of Verduno, one of the eleven villages of the Barolo region. Verduno is the original home of this unique variety that was almost lost and is now a well-established DOC wine. The best known version of this wine is produced by Fratelli Alessandria in Verduno. Their special edition of this wine is called Speziale and so well known that they have opened a high-end spa under the same name. Keep in mind that only about 500 people live in Verduno.
The wine is generally 100% Pelaverga but generally blended across vineyards. Most are located in the 250-300 meter elevation range on soils that have medium density calcareous soils that tend to limestone.
The wines are pressed and fermented with no oak usage and an early release. The medium to light body wine has high acidity, medium tannins and a surprising intensity and complexity.
