Region: Trentino Alto Adige
Quality Level in EU/Italian Wine Law: Sub zone of Zirisi
Primary Grape Varietals: One of three main black grapes of Trentino with Teroldedo and Lagrein
Characteristics: Genetically shown to be related to Teroldego and has the typical elevated acidity and cherry fruit flavors with deep color and ripeness.
Serve: Room temperature
Similar to the other black grape varieties of Trentino, Marzemino is a mid to late ripening grape in the moderate continental climate. It can suffer from Botrytis and Mildew and was traditionally trained in Pergola to maximize air flow and to take advantage of this high yielding grape.
A focus on quality has move to Spur pruned cordon and new clones that limit yields, creating more flavor intensity in the grapes. The best and ripest examples of Marzemino wines are in the Zirisi sub zone of Trentino and are labeled under Trentino DOC. In Zirisi, the vines receive full sun and are exposed to rich calcareous soils with basalt.
