Region: Trentino Alto Adige
Quality Level in EU/Italian Wine Law: Trentino DOC
Primary Grape Varietals: One of three main black grapes of Trentino with Teroldedo and Marzemino
Characteristics: A typical Italian, red fruited wine that can be low in tannin and is usually made for early consumption. Some oak can be used with higher quality fruit but generally it is left to be in the style of other Italian reds (Refosco, Teroldego)
Serve: Room temperature
Similar to the other black grape varieties of Trentino, Lagrein is a late ripening grape in the moderate continental climate and prefers warm sites at lower elevation to fully ripen. It can suffer from poor fruit set and associated lower yields. The grapes can be less ripe in the stems and shorter maceration is often used to avoid bitter flavors.
The grape is deeply colored and also made into Rose wines.
Red wines have sour plums, grass, bitter cherries and chocolate with overall an easy drinking wine with chewy dark fruit.
