Falanghina is becoming a bright star in Italian white wines as it grows in popularity locally and in the international market. There are two key biotypes that are grown in Campania - Fleagrea and Beneventana - but the bottles typically carry the Falanghina name only. It is an old grape with a rich, local history with records dating back to 1666.
The wine has good overall acidity and holds onto acidity well in the vineyard. It has a renowned aroma of apricot and can be very elegant on the nose and palate. The wine is medium to medium + in body and has a good bit of substance to it. It might be more subtle on the nose when compared to its Fiano neighbor but is known to be quite floral and aromatic when made well.
Falanghina del Sannio DOC is a sub-regional area that is fully dedicated to the grape. It is one of the largest DOCs in therein and accounts for almost 75% of all acreage dedicated to Falanghina in Compania. The DOC size does mean that vineyards are planted in a range of conditions and soils. One can split the region into a western half that is warmer and wetter. The eastern half shares the diversity of soils to include clay, volcanic soils, sandstone, limestone and alluvial deposits .
