What a name… and it is likely you may never find this wine in most stores. It has an interesting history and many believe the history is better than the wine itself. After all it is a simple Trebbiano wine – Trebbiano Toscano with some blending options including 10-20 % Malvasia.
The wine is a DOC region in Lazio and legend has it that a German Bishop named Johan Fugger was on his way to Rome for a meeting with the Pope. He sent a faithful servant ahead each day to find the best wines in advance of his next stop. Stopping at an Inn, the servant found a local wine that was labeled Vinum Est Bonum. The servant was so excited about this wine that he wrote “EST, EST, EST” on the door for the Bishop to see.
According to the legend, the Bishop fell for this wine and stopped his voyage there, spending the rest of his life in Montefiascone. The bishop is buried there today with the same three words on his inscription and yearly festivals support the wine and his legend.
The wine itself is a medium bodied white wine with medium intensity flavors of fresh pineapple and tropical fruit with peach and mineral notes with medium + acid. The wine is balanced with medium alcohol and it pairs well with cacio e pepe pasta, seafood, chicken dishes, vegetables or a nice omelette.
