Region: Sardegna
Quality Level in EU/Italian Wine Law: Cannonau di Sardegna
Primary Grape Varieties: Cannonau - AKA Grenache Noir, Grenache, Garnacha
Sardegna may be the location in which the highly planted grape of Grenache first originated. Grenache has propagated around the world due to its drought and heat tolerance and it is an important grape for Southern Rhone blends. In Sardegna, the grape is known as Cannonau
Cannonau is a black grape, made into red wines from the warm climate of Sardegna. The high winds can reduce yields by affecting fruitiest and they can be affected by fungal diseases. Other than that, Cannonau is ideally suited for Sardegna with its vigorous nature and ability to ripen late in the warm, mediterranean climate. Cannonau is drought tolerant and Sardegna sees less rain as one travels south, allowing Cannonau to prosper across the island. This is amplified by the lack of rain during the growing season.
Cannonau can accumulate high levels of sugar and can become jammy if allowed to become overly ripe. In the vineyard, yield control with planting density, training (often as bush vines) and siting on less fertile soils allows for higher quality. Root stock selection is also key to finding the vines that perform well in the region and they can be selected for lower vigor and yield.
The grape can oxidate easily and must be handled protectively in the winery. The better examples display lighter color, red fruit, spicy and herbal notes with low to medium tannin, lower acidity and med to high alcohol.
